Nestled in the heart of Surry Hills, Sydney, Café & Cucina has become a beloved local institution, known for its rich Italian atmosphere, authentic menu, and – most notably – exceptional coffee. Owned by Franco Amitrano, the café is a true reflection of his roots, passion, and dedication to quality.

From Capri to Sydney

Franco’s coffee journey began on the sun-drenched island of Capri, Italy, where his love for coffee was first sparked. After immigrating to Australia at the age of 24, Franco carried that passion with him, eventually leading him to establish Café & Cucina in 2014. The café – adorned in the bold colours of the Italian flag – has been under Franco’s ownership for over 11 years, with his son Christian now helping to manage a second location nearby.

Why Merlo?

Franco’s decision to partner with Merlo Coffee came from a desire to offer something different – coffee that was bold, fresh, and consistent. Disappointed with the quality from his previous roaster, Franco read about Merlo in Gourmet Traveller and was immediately drawn to the blend’s strong flavours and rich chocolate notes – flavours that reminded him of home. It was exactly what he was looking for.

Franco has now been serving Merlo coffee for over 16 years – first at Café Capri, and now at Café & Cucina. His ongoing loyalty stems not only from the coffee’s quality but also from the outstanding support he receives from his Merlo account manager, Glenn May.

A Local Favourite

Whether it’s a weekday espresso or a weekend cappuccino, Franco limits himself to just two coffees a day – but for many of his customers, one cup is never enough. In fact, some travel from as far as Wollongong just to enjoy a cup of his expertly brewed Merlo blend.

The café’s menu features Italian classics, with Franco’s signature prosciutto panini being a crowd favourite. Meanwhile, the baristas at Café & Cucina are known not just for their technical skill, but for their personal touch – even creating latte art with customers’ names.

This attention to detail and heartfelt service has earned Café & Cucina a loyal following, and a reputation as one of the best cafés in the area.
