A Spotlight on Homelessness: Supporting 3rd Space
The Christmas period can be a tough time, and as 2023 draws to a close, we would like to highlight one of the organisations Merlo supports.
3rdSpace has been set up to help break the cycle of homelessness. A day drop-in centre for those who are currently homeless or are at risk of homelessness can find the support they need, along with friendship and a sense of worth.
Every day, 3rdSpace supports over 100 people and families who are at risk, by offering them a hot shower, meals, and access to medical, mental health, legal, employment, and financial support. The centre was started 40 years ago to empower all its visitors to cope with the struggles of day-to-day living.
SUPPORTING THOSE IN NEED
Merlo has been supporting 3rdSpace since 2018 providing coffee and other consumables including cups and lids to the 3rdSpace café.
The café provides healthy and appetising food at a low cost for those who are often in challenging environments. The café is a place to relax, with affordable menu options, dine-in and takeaway and of course Merlo coffee!
SHARING SOME CHRITMAS JOY
This year Merlo has increased their support by raising funds for this worthy organisation through the sale of some special gingerbread men in all our Merlo Flagship Cafe's. The Christmas treats will be available from Saturday 2 December until stocks run out.
Funds raised from the sale of these treats will go towards the centre's Christmas Lunch which they put on for free.
VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The volunteers at 3rdSpace are vital to the running of the organisation, and thanks to this dedicated group, the doors of the centre can stay open for seven days a week.
On average, 200 volunteers provide over 10,00 hours of their time to help those who use the centre. Their roles are varied and include working in the café, on the reception desk, administrative duties and managing donated items.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Third Space is always open to outside assistance, and there are several ways to help:
Donate goods
The centre relies on donations from the community to support those who use the centre. They welcome donations of all good quality casual clothing, any travel-size toiletries and non-perishable food. Backpacks are also a welcome addition. If you would like to donate, contact the centre to see what they currently need.
Make a contribution
Donations no matter what the size are welcome by the centre, and all funds donated go towards people experiencing homelessness. You can speak to the centre about a one-off donation or something more regular.
