How to Brew the Perfect Cup with a V60

How to Brew the Perfect Cup with a V60 - Merlo Coffee

There’s something special about brewing coffee with a V60. It’s simple, hands-on, and allows you to bring out the delicate flavours of your beans. Whether you’re new to pour-over coffee or looking to refine your technique, here’s a step-by-step guide to making the most out of your V60.

What You’ll Need

  • V60 dripper
  • V60 paper filter
  • Freshly ground coffee (medium-fine grind - we recommend 5.7)
  • Kettle (ideally with a gooseneck spout)
  • Digital scales
  • Timer
  • Your favourite mug or carafe

Step 1: Heat and Rinse

Start by boiling fresh water. Place the paper filter inside your V60, then rinse it thoroughly with hot water. This removes any papery taste and preheats your dripper and mug. Discard the rinse water before brewing.

Step 2: Measure and Grind

For a single cup, use 15g of coffee to 250g of water (a 1:16–17 ratio is a good starting point). Grind your beans to a medium-fine texture — similar to table salt. Freshly ground beans make a world of difference.

Step 3: Bloom

Add your coffee grounds to the V60 and gently shake to level the bed. Start your timer and pour just enough hot water (about twice the weight of your coffee) to saturate the grounds. This step is called the “bloom” and allows gases to escape, leading to better extraction. Let it sit for 30–45 seconds.

Step 4: Pour in Circles

Slowly pour the remaining water in small, steady circles, working from the centre outwards and back in again. Aim to pour gradually over 2–3 minutes, keeping the water level consistent without flooding. A gooseneck kettle helps with control, but patience is just as important.

Step 5: Enjoy

Once the water has passed through, remove the V60, give your coffee a gentle swirl, and take a moment to enjoy the aroma before your first sip.

Tips for a Better Brew

Adjust grind size: If your coffee tastes sour, grind finer; if it’s bitter, grind coarser.

Stay consistent: Weighing coffee and water makes it easier to refine your brew.

Experiment: Try different beans, ratios, and pouring techniques to discover what you love most.

Brewing with a V60 isn’t just about making coffee — it’s about slowing down and enjoying the process. With a little practice, you’ll be able to brew a clean, flavourful cup every time.
