Brewing Exceptional Coffee with a Hario V60: A Comprehensive Guide

Brewing Exceptional Coffee with a Hario V60: A Comprehensive Guide - Merlo Coffee

The Hario V60 is a classic Japanese pour‑over coffee maker loved for its simplicity and clean, flavourful results. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced barista, the V60 gives you full control over extraction to create a fresh, balanced cup every time.

In this guide, you’ll learn why the V60 is a favourite among home brewers and how to use it to craft the perfect pour‑over coffee.

Why Choose a Hario V60?

The Hario V60 is designed for precision and simplicity. Using a cone‑shaped paper filter, it produces a clean, full‑flavoured cup. It’s a favourite for:

  • Control: Adjust grind size, water temperature, and pour speed to shape flavour.
  • Speed: Brew a single cup in just a few minutes, ideal for busy mornings or slow weekends.
  • Affordability: The plastic V60 starts at just $12.50, making it one of the most accessible manual brew methods.

With pour‑over brewing, your skills will improve over time, and each small adjustment can enhance your coffee’s character.

Essential Equipment for V60 Brewing

Before you can start, you’ll need to gather a few essentials:

  • Hario V60 - options include plastic, ceramic or glass version.
  • Filter - Hario's pre-bonded paper filters make a clean coffee
  • Freshly ground coffee (5.7): We recommend our Private Blend, Espresso Blend and Colombia Light Roast for pour-over coffee. Or try our Sample Pack, which contains 4 x 250g of our favourite coffees.
  • Kettle
  • Coffee Grinder (optional): Or we can grind your beans in‑store or online to the recommended V60 rating. Learn more about the different grind ratings here.
  • Filtered water - For a cleaner, smoother brew.

How to Brew Coffee with a Hario V60

Step 1: Prepare the Filter

Fold the paper filter along the seam and place it into the V60. Rinse the filter with hot water to remove paper taste and warm the vessel. Discard the water, keeping the filter in place.

Step 2: Add Coffee Grounds

Use 15g of coffee (about three level tablespoons) per cup. Shake the V60 gently to level the grounds for even extraction.

Step 3: Bloom the Coffee

Pour hot water (about 92°C) in a circular motion to wet all the grounds. Stop pouring and let the coffee bloom for 30 seconds as gases escape and aroma develops.

Step 4: Continue Pouring

Slowly pour the remaining water in a steady circular motion, avoiding the edges of the filter. Pause occasionally to let the coffee drip through. Continue until the dripping slows and the brew looks pale.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

Remove the V60 and filter, and enjoy your fresh pour‑over coffee straight from the cup.

Tips for the Perfect V60 Brew

  • Adjust your coffee‑to‑water ratio to find your preferred strength. Less water = brighter acidity; more water = more bitterness.
  • Pour slowly and in circles to ensure even extraction and avoid overflow.
  • Experiment with bloom time to balance acidity and sweetness.
  • Use filtered water for the cleanest flavour.
  • Keep coffee fresh - Buy smaller amounts more frequently; whole beans stay at peak flavour for about six weeks.
