The island of Sumatra in the west of Indonesia is renowned for its coffee production, with the Sumatran region of Sidikalang particularly noted for producing high quality harvests. Wahana Estate - named after Wahana, the Indonesian word for vehicle - looks to drive Indonesian coffee forward through a combination of tradition and innovation.
Naturally processed for extra sweetness and depth of flavour, the Sumatra Wahana is deeply aromatic: cinnamon, plum, cocoa, baked fruit and caramel. These rich flavours are carried through the creamy body, finishing in dark chocolate and a mild light orange acidity.
We love this coffee extracted through an espresso machine - the intensity of the cocoa, spice and fruit flavours carry beautifully through milk and the jammy sweetness of caramel and raisin makes for a lovely long black. As a filter the Wahana is rich and juicy, with the baked apple and plum notes coming to the fore and the light orange acidity complementing the cocoa and caramel base.
Wahana Estate was established in 2005 and located in Lae Mungkur village, Sidikalang sub-district, Dairi district, North Sumatra - Indonesia. Historically, Sidikalang is one of the most popular coffee producing regions in Indonesia. Wahana Estate is located exactly in GPS coordinates of N02o41'06.9" and E098o20'56.2".Wahana Estate plantation spans across area of 468 Ha. Geographically Wahana Estate has 250 Ha for coffee plantations, 30 Ha for coffee nursery, 10 Ha for coffee processing facilities (mills), 100 Ha for Natural Reserve and the remaining area for growing vegetables, composting factory, worker facilities, other facilities and guest houses. The estate has a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program, and a well-established medical clinic to supply health care to the workers for free. In addition, they also maintain excellent relations with local small farmers by offering help through their Farmers Support Center, which helps farmers by providing information and education about best-practice farm management, the distribution of shade trees, how to implement organic fertilizer, and offering coffee seeds to farmers for free. Wahana Estate currently also buys a select portion of ripe coffee cherries from these small producers in the surrounding area in order to supplement their output.
