The Merlo Coffee Art Series has been developed to support Art from the Margins – a creative initiative of Wesley Mission Queensland. Each year, Merlo Coffee selects a piece of art by one of AFTM’s artists and showcases the work on a limited edition set of collectable high quality porcelain coffee cups and saucers produced by Seltmann Weiden. This year’s artist Nicky Carey was born in Ireland and his work has been widely exhibited and is held in private collections in Australia, Europe and the United States. Within Nicky’s works are figures and events that are mainly derived from Freudian and Jungian psychology. There is a raw and intimate intensity and an unflinching view of the dark side of the human psyche, with a sardonic record of illness and suicide to salvage energies of on-going existence. Colour controls the shape of the image and there is always an obsessive use of imagery that is held together with a childlike freedom and playfulness, both in paintings and etchings alike. Art From The Margins (AFTM) is a creative initiative of Wesley Mission Queensland. AFTM bridges the gap between artists living with disadvantage and the wider community. The organisation supports and promotes the work of artists living with mental health issues, physical or intellectual disabilities and homelessness. AFTM currently provides exhibition and professional development opportunities for over 400 artists living in and around the Brisbane area.
