Coming to you from the West Valley of Costa Rica, our December Bean of the Month was grown in some of the most fertile soil in the world which is reflected in the quality of the bean.
Costa Rica Hacienda Pilas offers fruity flavours of watermelon, peach and nectarine which are accompanied by enticing aromatics of cherry and dark chocolate. The clean, mild acidity and juicy, full body are then rounded out by a dark chocolate aftertaste to create a truly memorable brew.
The Hacienda Pilas farm is dedicated to the growth and production of coffee under strict sustainable and social labour practices. Currently the hacienda employs more than 30 permanent workers, plus 200 pickers during harvest season. Its 160 hectares of Catuai coffee grow on fertile volcanic soils between 1000-1200masl., classified as Good Hard Bean according to international standards. Costa Rica's West Valley is well known for high quality coffee, helped significantly by the climate and distinct wet and dry seasons.
Owned and managed by Eduardo Gurdian Pacheco, a passionate coffee agronomist with extensive experience in Costa Rica and Sumatra. Eduardo’s family have generations of coffee growing experience in Costa Rica, which is reflected in the quality of the estates coffee. Ongoing quality improvement is critical as climate change means the rains are not as predictable as in the past. New varietals are being trialed and trees that struggle being removed and replaced.
Eduardo has also brought in bees to assist with pollination and they too are well cared for, in his words “they are my little workers, part of the family!”.
