Bayside Café serves up Brisbane's best coffee bean to its customers!
When Alan Johnson took over a small Cleveland café 24-years ago he never realised what he was getting himself into.
Café Arabica was his first business venture after working in the retail grocery business for almost two decades.
“We were given the opportunity to buy the café, so I decided to give it a go. I initially started off with myself and three other staff,” Alan said.
“The first four years were pretty tough as we made a name for ourselves, and I got to know the business.”
In the early days the café used to open at 9am and close at 10pm.
“That just about killed me. I was working 110 hours a week for the first 2 years.”
Now a Bayside fixture, Café Arabica has a regular clientele. Many would know Bev who runs front of house.
Alan reckons Bev knows as least 200 customers by name and their coffee order.
That coffee is Merlo. A four-bean blend that they’ve been serving up for almost as long as the café has been open.
“The four-bean blend is made especially for us. It’s not as strong as some coffee but our clientele enjoys it. I think it’s a very Australian type of coffee – it simply suits the average person,” Alan said.
On average they’d go through 15 to 20 kilograms of beans a week. At Cleveland they like their coffee served in mugs with the most popular brew a flat white for customers of Café Arabica.
And while Covid has proved a real challenge Alan is thankful for his regulars who have helped keep him afloat.
