About Merlo

the renaissance of coffee in queensland

To generations of coffee drinkers, the Merlo family's exquisite brew from their 1958 Italian espresso machine caused a revolution in Queensland. No longer content to sip heavily manufactured coffees, the first commercial machine together with the Merlo's love of fine coffee introduced Queenslanders to a world of velvet rich, smooth tastes. The first Bar Merlo was established in Queen Street, Brisbane in 1992 and three years later, the Merlo Coffee Torrefazione (Italian coffee roasting house) was opened in Fortitude Valley.

the science of a great coffee

At our Torrefazione, we import highest grade green beans from Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Kenya, Brazil and New Guinea. Every 24 hours, these beans are roasted to release their flavour and then blended to create a range of aromatic, enticing Merlo blends. The beans are then packaged in our patented airlock bags and tins and stored in our purpose built humidity controlled coldroom. This ensures maximum flavour and freshness is passed on to you.

coffee appliances

In conjunction with roasting we stock a range of espresso appliances and homewares to extract the full pleasure from our beans. From the humble stove top variety to state of the art electric espresso machines. Please call drop in, or order on-line.

why at merlocoffee fresh espresso means fresh

Why is fresh coffee best? It's all about the flavour and serving the best cup of coffee to your customer, so they return to enjoy it again and again. At Merlo Coffee ensuring our espresso is fresh is paramount. Everything we do from roasting to delivery ensures that we keep true to our promise of freshness.

  • Daily Roastings - Coffee is roasted Daily to guarantee freshness.
  • Date Roasted - Every bag of Merlo Coffee is date stamped so you know when your Merlo Coffee was roasted.
  • Dehumidified Cold Room - Since heat, light and moisture are the enemies of freshly roasted coffee beans, once the beans are cooled they are stored in our purpose built dehumidified cold room - and we believe it is the only one of its kind.
  • Air locked Resealable Bags - When you place your order, we place the beans in an air locked resealable bag. The bags have a one way valve which allows the natural CO2 gas (which comes of the coffee after roasting) to force out while keeping out oxygen and moisture, which together can cause the coffee to deteriorate rapidly.
