First there was Papa Merlo, who started a little trattoria in his homeland in Tirano, Italy. Then, his son a budding adventurer, Gino Merlo migrated to Australia and bought with him Queensland’s first Italian espresso machine. And then there was Dean .. a bold pocket rocket who took coffee beans to a whole new level.
Dean loved coffee so much he roasted it himself. From humble beginning, he started BarMerlo an Italian espresso bar in Queen St, down town Brisbane. Next he created a Merlo Torrefazione in Fortitude Valley. A unique store dedicated to roasting and selling coffee beans.
“No pomp and ceremony here,” said Dean.
“This store will be dedicated to the bean.”
And so it was. Merlo Coffee was born. Today Merlo Coffee has five Torrefaziones, 10 BarMerlos and can be found in over 1000 distinguished cafes and restaurants across Australia.
